St. Bernard Project Receives $3 Million for Disaster Recovery Lab

The , the community investment arm of , has announced a three-year, $3 million grant to the in support of its efforts to share lessons learned from post-Katrina rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and improve disaster-preparedness plans in other communities.

The funds will be used to create a Disaster Resilience and Recovery Lab that serves as a model for communities looking to improve the capacity of individuals, families, and businesses to prepare for and recover from natural disasters. SBP will work with community leaders, homeowners, and small and midsize businesses to mitigate risk and increase resilience, and, when a disaster hits, will be on site to share the organization's recovery model, which emphasizes taking advantage of the professional skills and talents of individual volunteers.

Since 2006, Zurich has partnered with SBP to rebuild homes and communities in New Orleans, Joplin, Missouri, and Staten Island, New York, while developing and applying best practices learned in New Orleans.
