has announced that charitable through its online payment platform reached a record $857 million during the 2015 holiday season.
Between November 27 and December 31, more than 7.11 million people from 183 countries made 9.1 million donations to charity via the PayPal platform, including $45.8 million during the #GivingTuesday event on December 1 — a world record for total donations processed in a twenty-four-hour period. Total charitable giving via the platform during the holiday season increased more than $113 million, or 15 percent, on a year-over-year basis, while the number of charities receiving donations totaled 258,759, up 6 percent.
According to PayPal, Americans gave the most ($691,911,261) through the site during the holiday season, followed by residents of the United Kingdom ($49,377,896), Canada ($42,959,820), Germany ($16,752,694), France ($14,415,355), and Australia ($13,023,564). The company also reported that of the 9.1 million donations made using PayPal, 21 percent were made with mobile devices, a 26 percent year-over-year increase.
